A focus on
Nailympia
success stories, resources & influential figures
As I write this article, I’m preparing to kick off the first Nailympia of the year in Anaheim, USA, I’ll be working alongside the Premiere Show team at trade exhibition, Premiere Anaheim, and welcoming competitors to the arena. Entries have more than doubled since 2024, and I am delighted that more nail professionals are embracing the opportunities that Nailympia presents.
Nailympia Germany is next on the agenda, taking place 28-30 March in Düsseldorf. Having reviewed the entries for this competition. I’d like to emphasise the importance of reading competition rules carefully. The category title itself does not provide clear guidance on what should be created: each category has a set of rules, which are precise, directive and provide the necessary foundation for creative minds to flourish.
You cannot construct an entry without understanding the required materials and expected structure. After all, why build a garden shed when the rules call for a crystal palace? The Nailympia website houses the rules, scoresheets and a free, downloadable 20-page guideline document that will support your competition journey. I hope to see you at a Nailympia location soon!

COMPETITOR SPOTLIGHT
FRANCESCA PALIOTTO – Winner the 3rd
Nailympia European Cup
2024
FP • Nail Studio & Academy di Francesca Paliotto
@francesca.paliotto
In 2024, Francesca Paliotto won the 3rd Nailympia European Cup, and was presented with the coveted trophy on the Nailympia London stage.
This competition, renowned for its rigorous evaluation and judging criteria, determines its European champion based on scores from four categories: Stiletto Nails, The Joy of Nails, Salon Nails and Reality Nails, in two competition locations.
The Nailympia European Cup rotates across major beauty industry events, with active locations currently including Nailympia Germany, to be hosted by BEAUTY Düsseldorf, and Nailympia London, to be hosted at Professional Beauty Autumn in October. The Cup is presented at the London event, solidifying the competition’s status as a pinnacle of excellence in the nail industry.
Hailing from Ferrara, a city in northern Italy, Francesca’s journey into the world of nails began at 12 years old, and has been driven by passion.
Six years ago, she opened FP: Nail Studio & Academy di Francesca Paliotto. Her dedication to the craft led her to train with various educators, but she credits her mentor, Italy’s award-winning Deborah Cocco, as a fundamental influence in her nail competition journey.
“I love everything about nails, from simple salon manicures to technical and complex works,” Francesca shares. Her success in competitions is rooted in her relentless training, eye for detail and commitment to continuous improvement. She believes that every small mistake presents an opportunity to refine her skills further.
Francesca finds immense motivation in competing against the best nail artists worldwide. “Meeting esteemed competitors is invaluable, as I always learn something new,” she says. Her advice to aspiring competitors is clear: “Train hard and believe in your abilities.”
Winning the Nailympia European Cup is a milestone that Francesca holds dear, as it symbolises a reward for her hard work and sacrifices. This achievement has significantly contributed to her personal and professional growth, reinforcing her beliefs in perseverance and dedication.
Francesca feels most comfortable working with UV hard gel and acrygel systems. Looking ahead, she plans to expand her academy’s training courses and participate in more competitions, though she prefers to embrace opportunities as they come – rather than plan too rigidly.
The nail stylist remains optimistic about the future of the nail industry, believing that it will continue to evolve with innovative techniques. One thing is certain: she will keep competing, as the experience not only enhances her skills, but brings an unmatched sense of accomplishment and excitement.
After dedicating the past two years to competitions, Francesca acknowledges the challenges but affirms: “Even though the journey was hard, I achieved a big goal.” With her unwavering determination and love for the craft, there is no doubt that she will continue to leave her mark on the global nail competition scene.

JUDGE SPOTLIGHT
DAVID FOWLER – competition organiser, session stylist, consultant, developer of industry standards & product researcher/developer
@david.fowler69
Area of judging expertise: Structure
Years as a judge: 17 years
Number of
Nailympia
events judged: 12, including London, Germany, Orlando, Mexico, Anaheim and Online.
Personal biography: “After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a focus on human rights, I began a career in law enforcement,” David shares. “I spent two and a half years as a patrol officer, before transitioning to investigative work. As a detective, I gained experience in several divisions, including narcotics, homicide, suicide, domestic violence and sex crimes. Eventually, I made a bold shift into the beauty industry, focusing on nail enhancements: a career path that has kept me both busy and inspired. When I’m not working, I enjoy exploring the great outdoors: canyoneering and walking around Zion National Park in Utah, USA, which I’m fortunate to call home.”
Career biography: “I’ve enjoyed participating at high-profile events such as the Grammy Awards, Oscars and Sundance Film Festival, and providing nail services for celebrities in Los Angeles. Additionally, I have collaborated with consumer press magazines to create imagery and worked on projects for entertainment television.”
“I have been a consultant for numerous professional brands that have achieved success in the competitive global market. I’ve worked closely with chemists and chemical engineers to develop formulas across all nail enhancement systems, including monomer and polymer (acrylic), UV/LED gel and UV/LED gel polish. I’ve also explored nail polish production technologies designed for the consumer market.
“Beyond product development, I have consulted on marketing campaigns, helping to build brand awareness and drive success. I am skilled in collaborating with renowned photographers to produce impactful imagery and videos for promotional efforts.”
Industry accolades: “I’ve been privileged to train numerous top-ranked, award-winning competitors and create brands for nail professionals around the world.”
Industry figures you admire: “Stefanie Lo Re, Karin Ström, Tom Holcomb, Alisha Rimando, Alex Fox and my students, who have found success as competitors and salon professionals.”
Why you believe in nail competitions? “They bring out the best in nail professionals by providing opportunities to recognise their strengths and identify areas for improvement. What I value most about these events is how they unite nail professionals from all over the world. Competitions create a space where individuals can share techniques, exchange ideas and connect over a shared passion for nails: a passion that’s essential for participating at this level. These events foster friendships and collaboration, driving continuous growth and elevating the quality of the nail industry as a whole.”
Advice to competitors: “Have fun! Without it, you risk setting yourself up for disappointment,” David shares. “Set goals that go beyond winning, and focus on achieving those milestones. Everyone has good days and bad days, so creating goals unrelated to placement can sometimes lead to podium success.
“Personally, I’ve struggled with nerves, which is why I always encourage competitors to focus on enjoying the process and striving towards their personal goals. At the end of the day, we’re all doing the same thing. Sharing good times and positive energy often leads to the best results.”

NAILYMPIA COMPETITIONS:
Your questions answered
Can I work on my own hand or do I need a model?
This is subject to the organiser’s opinion and individual location. For example, in London you can create nails for the Stiletto Nails and The Joy of Nails categories on your own hand. Check with the relevant event organiser in advance of the competition.
What length must the pink & white nails be for the tip & overlay and sculpture competitions?
Nailympia does not specify a nail length for these categories, although it does offer advice on creating a stunning competition nail in the Nailympia Guidelines 2025. Nailympia asks that every nail is consistent, meaning the competitor can choose the length and ratio of pink to white and repeat this format exactly across three fingers. The sidewalls, apex, structure and length of the pinky and thumb must adhere to the same consistency, but be finished in a red crème nail polish. Note for 2025: judges will want to see three moons (lunula) in a softer white on the nails.
If the rules do not mention an aspect of the nail creation or styling, what should I do?
If there is no mention or clear indication of a technique, product use or style in the rules pertaining to any given competition, you can proceed as desired.
I’m an educator that has never competed. What is my entry division?
You must register as a Division 2 competitor.
Do I need to bring electrical adaptors to the
Nailympia
arena? Yes. Wherever you are travelling, you must bring an extension cable/lead and enough adaptors for your equipment.
I’ve brought acetone with me, but the jar is not labelled. What do I do?
You can take a pen/marker and label the jar before the competition starts. If it is not labelled, the floor judges will take the product away and give it back to you when the competition ends.
Can I share products with my teammates?
You must not share anything with your teammates, friends, spectators or interpreter during the competition. You must gain the attention of a floor judge and they will help you source what you need, if it is possible and within reason.
What size does the box need to be for
Mixed Media
and
Flat Art
entries?
Please refer to the Nailympia rules for your chosen location. This competition may require a certain sized box in one location, or photos and a video in another. If it requires a box, it must not be larger than eight inches square, as it may be displayed. For USA competitions, all turn-in entries are not to exceed A4 size, as all are displayed in the arena.
My model is 16 years old. Is this permitted at
Nailympia
?
Every location is subject to local government rules and regulations, as well as stipulations made by each event co-ordinator. Check with the Nailympia host before registering. For example, in London and at all three USA locations, models must be over the age of 16.
For L&P and UV Gel pink & white competitions, do I need to create a precise smile line under the nails with red crème nail polish?
You no longer have to create a smile line on the pinky and thumb for these categories. The judges do not need to see white on the underside of those two nails.
How do we attach the nails for the
Fantasy Complete Look
category to the model?
Ensure the nails of the model are free from product and well-manicured. Apply press-on nails with your choice of nail glue or resin. Apply the Fantasy nail creations with 3M High Performance Double-Sided Tape or Scotch Double-Sided Mounting Tape that can hold up to 2kg in weight. Keep the heavy pieces of Fantasy work towards the back of the nail to ensure they keep their balance and are comfortable for the model to wear.
Does each location have its own style of
Nailympia
?
Yes. Every location will choose from available competitions, or work with the team in the UK to design a new category. For example, Nailympia China 2025 will feature Cover Creative: a competition for press-on nails. If Reality Nails is to feature in five locations, the rules and scoresheet will be the same in each, however its themes will differ in each location. You must check with the location host, download the rules and ensure you are following the correct themes.
Will I receive my scoresheets?
Yes. Scoresheets are either handed out at the end of each Nailympia awards ceremony or emailed to competitors after the event. Scoresheets will present your criteria scores, overall score and ranking. Please note: judges are unable to give comments on scores if they cannot see the nails that were crafted. They cannot give a detailed appraisal to any competitor out of context (without the nails) after the event.
Where do I find out about the different
Nailympia
competitions?
Head to the official website, www.nailympia.com, then click on the menu header: Competitions & Locations. The drop-down menu lists all active competitions and will lead you to specific information and entry options.
For 2025, live locations comprise: Anaheim (USA), Düsseldorf (Germany), Shanghai (China), Orlando (USA), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), San Antonio (USA) and London (UK).
