Leading a team of nail technicians can be both rewarding and challenging, with managers often facing awkward situations that test their skillsets. Understanding how to address these issues effectively is crucial for maintaining a harmonious and productive workplace. Here, I consider common staffing challenges and provide strategies to deal with concerns, motivate a team and alleviate managerial anxiety.

Scheduling conflicts

Scenario: Imagine that two experienced nail technicians request the same holiday dates during a peak period. Denying both could lead to unrest, but approving both could strain your business’ operations.

Nergish regularly speaks at business events across the globe and is a judge for industry awards. She offers courses via www.hairandbeautyexpert.com and is CEO & founder of PHAB Service Stars: a measure of excellence for hair and beauty professionals.

Solution: Approach the situation with transparency and fairness, using clear communication and problem solving techniques to reduce tension and show respect for your team’s needs. Arrange a meeting with the involved parties to discuss the business’ needs and explore compromises. When doing so, consider factors such as prior commitments, seniority and flexibility. Alternatives, like splitting annual leave or scheduling additional support during absences, can demonstrate your willingness to be flexible.

Performance issues

Situation: A nail technician has been receiving complaints about the quality of their work, negatively impacting customer satisfaction and your business’ reputation. Other team members are picking up extra work to compensate, causing frustration and affecting morale.

Solution: Address the issue promptly and privately with the technician, providing constructive feedback by highlighting specific areas in need of improvement. Offer support via additional training, and emphasise the importance of maintaining high standards for personal and team success. Also recognise and appreciate the efforts of team members who have stepped up, and ensure that their workloads are balanced moving forward. Handling performance issues with empathy and support fosters a culture of continuous improvement and teamwork.

Dealing with staff concerns

Effective listening is key when addressing employee issues. Encourage nail technicians to voice their concerns, and hold regular team meetings and one-to-one check-ins to identify issues early. This proactive approach builds trust, demonstrates your commitment to your team’s wellbeing, and shows that you value and respect employees.

Motivating your team

Motivation stems from recognition, growth opportunities and a positive work environment. Competitions and awards can help, such as encouraging your most skilled nail technicians to apply for a PHAB Service Stars accolade. Celebrate achievements: both big and small, through praise, awards and/or incentives. Provide opportunities for professional development, such as workshops and advanced training courses, to help employees expand their skills and advance their careers. A motivated team is more engaged, productive and committed to delivering exceptional services.

Managing stress during difficult scenarios

Leadership comes with its share of stress and anxiety, especially when dealing with complex staffing issues. Practice stress management techniques, such as mindfulness, deep breathing and taking short breaks to clear your mind. Seek advice from mentors or peers, and don’t hesitate to delegate tasks when necessary. Remember that making mistakes is part of the learning process. Reflecting on past decisions and what you learned from them means you can handle similar experiences better in future, which can boost your confidence and effectiveness as a manager.

Handling challenging staff situations requires a blend of effective communication, empathy and problem solving. By addressing concerns considerately and managing your stress, you can create a thriving business environment where employees feel valued.
