Preparation is key to success, and planning for the
Scratch Stars Awards
practical judging day is no exception. Finalists in eight of the 18 awards categories complete a practical task and short interview in London, in the bid to take their category title. This year, finalists compete on 19 May.
I won the Scratch Stars Gel Polish Stylist of the Year award in 2022, 2023 and 2024, which earned me a place in the Scratch Stars Hall Of Fame. Here, I share my tried-and-tested to-do list and kit checklist: both of which are imperative for best showcasing your skills.
Prior to the competition:
• Choose a model and practice. Source a reliable hand model and practice as much as possible. Schedule sessions in your work diary and ensure your model takes care of their hands with frequent application of cuticle oil and hand lotion. Practice regularly to keep to time. When nerves kick in, muscle memory is very helpful!
• Order essentials. Make sure you have everything you need to compete on the day in your chosen category, and ask the organiser if you are unsure what to bring or have any questions. Double check you have packed everything you need.
• Book travel and accommodation. I always book my hotel and train tickets in advance to avoid last-minute stress and high prices. I prefer to travel the afternoon before the judging day, so I can be completely relaxed and focused on the competition.
• Plan your design and theme. If competing in an art category, sketch a few ideas before determining your final design. I love discussing concepts with clients, as they often offer great insights and enjoy being involved. Trust your skills and creative vision.
• Check personal presentation. This is judged, so represent the nail sector well by considering smart workwear and tying your hair back. When competing, I wore a tunic for a professional appearance.
“Every year presented a new challenge, but I loved the creative process, adrenaline rush and opportunity to network with other nail artists.”
TOP TIP: how to nail the interview
For the in-person interview, it’s a good idea to stay up-to-date with what’s happening in the nail industry. Questions often focus on industry trends and how you respond to workplace challenges.
