Do you know the dangers that are harboured in the air surrounding your nail station? Dust and fumes from nail services can pose serious health risks, including dizziness, respiratory issues and skin irritation – such as contact dermatitis, so proper ventilation and extraction systems are crucial to manage exposure.

Shocked by the lack of such facilities on her visit to a salon, and feeling nauseated after her appointment, Poala Taylor-Riddick was inspired to find a solution. Her husband, Paul Riddick, worked as a fume and dust extraction specialist, and after speaking with media experts, nail technicians and salon owners, the pair drew up ideas for salon-friendly units.

VODEX has since grown to offer fume and dust extraction products to various industries, creating its hero units: the SalonAIR® 1 and SalonAIR® 2 models, which feature xtending bamboo arms to extract dust and fumes at source. This means that airborne particles are removed before being inhaled by clients or staff. Capture accessories are also available. “Nail technicians are dedicated to perfecting their craft, forging a vibrant and inspiring community,” Poala comments. “Whether working from home or in a salon, they should invest in at-source extraction to protect themselves from long-term exposure to both airborne dust and fumes.”

The VODEX SalonAIR ® range

“The SalonAIR® range is a collection of dust and fume extractors designed specifically for the beauty industry,” shares Izzy Foster, social media executive at VODEX. “While dust collectors just collect the heavy dust that falls from filing, they do not capture fine dust that can remain airborne for hours and be inhaled. An extractor, however, will typically extract dust at source and filter it into clean air. This is only possible if it has a both a pre-filter for large particles of dust and debris, and a H13 HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, which catches any micro-particulates.

“A third filter, such as a carbon filter, extracts fumes, to help manage chemical smells n the workspace, keep sinuses clear and headaches at bay. We recommend investing in extractors with a minimum of three stages of filtration.”

Izzy shares the units available to nail and beauty professionals:

SalonAIR ® 1

“The best-selling model in the VODEX range, the SalonAIR® 1 is a quiet extraction unit with three stages of filtration and one capture accessory. It features a white bamboo arm and round nozzle.” Optional accessories: LED Bamboo Arm,

FileOWAY® Desk Top Pod and Built-in FileOTRAY® .

SalonAIR ® 2

“Similar to the SalonAIR® 1, but with dual extraction, the airflow is split 50/50 between each arm and accessory. Ideal for nail professionals that work side by side, the SalonAIR® 2 features two white bamboo arms and round nozzles.” Optional accessories: LED Bamboo Arms and Standard/LED Arm, plus Built-in FileOTRAY® .

SalonAIR ® UVC

“This model is ideal for nail pros who offer a high number of pedicures, and uses five-stage filtration to capture bacteria. The dust created during footcare treatments can contain viable fungal elements alongside microbial debris. The SalonAIR® UVC extracts fine particulates from breathing zones, and with the use of UVC technology, helps neutralise any captured bacteria. It comes as standard with the RigiFLEX Arm and AeroSHIELD® .”

“A pro’s chosen SalonAIR® unit should be positioned next or near to them. It holds the filters, and the chosen accessory connects directly to the unit to capture fumes and airborne dust. The machine will pull air through the capture accessory and into the unit, filter it, then release clean air back into the workspace.”

SalonAIR ® Mobile

“Designed for techs on the go, the Mobile unit is smaller than the SalonAIR® 1 and 2 models, and comes with a pull along bag for easy transportation. As the filters are smaller, they may require changing more frequently. The unit features a white bamboo arm and round nozzle as standard.” Optional accessories: LED Bamboo Arm and FileOWAY® Desk Top Pod.

Time to accessorize

“Choosing a capture accessory comes down to personal preference,” Izzy continues. “The FileOWAY® and FileOTRAY® models pull dust and fumes downwards, whereas the Bamboo Arms pull particulates from the side or above, depending on where the arm is positioned at the technician’s desk.” Izzy details VODEX’s capture accessories:

FileOWAY ® Desk Top Pod “This sits on top of desks and connects to the SalonAIR® unit via a flexible hose. It pulls air downward and filters air via the unit.”
Bamboo Arm “This flexible arm connects to the unit and can be moved and bent as required to get closer to the filing area. Use to pull dust from the side, above or below.” The arm is available with or without an LED light feature.
Built-in FileOTRAY ® “Similar to the FileOWAY® Pod, this accessory is fitted into existing desks and connects to the SalonAIR® unit via a flexible hose underneath the desk. It pulls air downward and filters air through the unit.”
SalonAIR ® Purifier “The VODEX SalonAIR® purifier acts as a second layer of protection, removing any leftover dust, fine particles and noxious gases up to 0.15 microns, and helping to alleviate the effects of allergies, asthma and breathing difficulties. Particulate and molecular filters are available. Use in addition to a zone one extraction unit (SalonAIR® 1, SalonAIR® 2, SalonAIR® Mobile, SalonAIR® UVC).”
A blocked filter.

The filter files

“For best protection against the effects of fume and dust inhalation, an extractor (not collector) with a minimum of three-stage filtration should be used,” shares Izzy. “A SalonAIR® unit needs to be checked weekly, and filters cleaned as recommended. Not changing or cleaning filters prevents suction and renders extraction iinefficient. Izzy details the three filters within a VODEX SalonAIR® unit:

1. Pre-filter.

“This is the first filter that sits inside the PreBOX cell. It catches the heavier dust particles from filing. We recommend changing it every three to four weeks, depending on the amount of use. The PreBOX should be taken out of the unit when changing the Pre-Filter Pad, as changing the filter while still in the unit may lead to dust dropping through and impacting the longevity of the other filters. The Pre-Filter must not be washed or hoovered.”

2. H13 HEPA filter.

“The High Efficiency Particulate Air filter (HEPA) captures finer dust and needs to be changed every six to nine months. True HEPA Filters cannot be washed or hoovered.”

3. Carbon filter.

“This removes chemical fumes from the breathing and working zones. The carbon absorbs vapours and needs to be replaced every nine to 12 months. The interior of the unit (around and under filters) can be hoovered.”
