EDITOR'S LETTER
In this month’s edition of Scratch, we analyse imposter syndrome: feelings of inferiority and low self-worth. It’s likely that we’ve all experienced these at stages of our careers, however it’s important to understand why these feelings occur in order to overcome them. Your nail art may not be as detailed as the nail pro on the next road, and your photos may not be as sharp as the snaps you see on Instagram, but remember – you have your own strengths.
Imagine if there was only one nail style, and everyone used the same products, from the same brand. Our industry would cease to exist! Its beauty is the diversity within it: there are pros that create perfect portrait art, others that excel at enhancements, those that offer incredible pedicures and techs who provide an outstanding client experience. What’s your niche? Write down your strengths and ask your clients why they choose you for their nail needs. When you feel despondent, refer to these notes and challenge any negative thoughts. Turn to page 24 for more advice on battling imposter syndrome, from pros with experience.
Whatever your system of choice and styling strengths, we’ve rounded up products and design ideas to help you nail upcoming trends. From twists on classic berry-toned manicures to 3D artistry, there are styles to pique the interests of all clients and get them excited about autumn/winter looks. As the season changes, also consider some tweaks to your business. Check out why user-generated content is proving popular on page 36, and how you can accommodate neurodiverse needs in the nail space from page 64.
Whatever your skillset, this issue is packed with advice to help you make the most of your talents and support the success of your business. But it’s important to emphasise that it’s your talent and your business. Comparison is the thief of joy, so do things your way – and with a smile!
