Nail & beauty innovations to note

REBECCA HITCHON gets the scoop on high-tech launches, decodes hot topics & sources tech-savvy tips for your business

We’re living in the ‘exponential age’: a phase where technology is advancing like never before – and the nail and beauty realm is no exception. From supporting business growth to offering personalised beauty and wellness solutions, tech innovations are having a profound impact. Let’s explore seven companies and technologies making their mark…

After Kerryn Macdonald’s nail brand, Mint Tint, ceased trading in 2024, the entrepreneur utilised skills from her previous career in website design and digital marketing to found Indi, a website and booking platform for nail techs. Kerryn’s goal was clear: to help nail pros access the high-quality websites and business tools typically tailored to large salons.

Indi

comprises a SEO-optimised website, booking system, consultation form builder, deposit and cancellation policy tools, plus marketing support. Its USP is its flexible design: techs can use whichever Indi features they require, and switch off the rest, as well as integrate any of the tools into their existing websites. As their businesses grow, so does Indi – with additional staff members able to be added to the system.

Kerryn Macdonald

“I kept seeing brilliant nail pros facing the same issues: not attracting new clients, losing revenue due to no-shows and cancellations, and lacking an online presence,” says Kerryn. “I had the digital marketing background to fix that, and the industry experience to know what techs need, so I put my all into building Indi.”

Three plans, starting from a free option and ranging to £19 per month, are available via www.bookindi.co

No-show support

Indi also offers a free, online calculator, to help self-employed nail techs understand how much income they are losing to no-shows. The tool asks pros to input their average appointment value, number of no-shows per month and operating weeks per year, and creates a breakdown of the cost of missed appointments. Access the calculator via www.bookindi.co/no-show-calculator

Arrvo

“Arrvo is built around the idea that cancelled appointment slots should fill themselves,” says the app’s founder,

Samuel Nwaobia. Twenty-four hours before a client’s appointment, Arrvo automatically sends a WhatsApp message asking them to confirm. If no response is received, another message is sent. “The average open rate for appointment reminder emails is around 20%, whereas for WhatsApp messages it is 94%,” Samuel shares. “Arrvo reminders ask clients to reply: 1 to confirm or 2 to reschedule. Someone who replies ‘1’ has made a conscious commitment, dramatically reducing the chance of a no-show.”

When a client reschedules an appointment or isn’t responding to reminders, Arrvo automatically offers the opening to the business’ waitlist, with the first to reply getting the slot. Able to be integrated with Fresha and Timely, Arrvo’s other features include the option to request deposits, post-service Google review requests and rebooking reminders, client risk profiles and a public booking page. “Businesses reduce their no-show rate from around 14% to approximately 4% with Arrvo, and recover an average of £800 per month in revenue,” Samuel concludes.

Pros can join the Arrvo waitlist and secure founding member pricing (six months free, then from £19 per month) via www.arrvo.app

URocked

From payments solution provider, Paynt, comes URocked: a digital tipping platform helping businesses to accept cashless gratuities both individually and as a team, track and split tips and receive them into designated bank accounts. Operating in the UK, Ireland and the Baltics, URocked’s app allows pros to decide their payout schedules and access a personal QR code to earn tips. The app has a default setting that charges customers a processing fee, but this can be adjusted so a business contributes.

“URocked’s USP is its ability to split the bill from a tip, and send gratuities directly to the digital wallets of a team or its members,” shares Swati Deshpande, marketing manager at Paynt. “The app is designed to eliminate the complexity of tip distribution, offering a process that is fair, transparent and 100% compliant with UK and Ireland tipping laws. Plus, by bypassing a salon’s bank account, tips are treated similarly to cash, removing the burden of employer National Insurance Contributions (NIC) and holiday pay liabilities, as well as any processing fees.”

iPolish® Tech startup, iPolish® , debuted its colour-changing press-on nails to stunned attendees at Las Vegas trade show, CES, earlier this year. Since then, the technology has been attracting the attention of thousands of social media users. Offering over 300 colours, the press-ons allow nail enthusiasts to instantly choose and change their nail colour anytime and anywhere using the iPolish® app. Once a hue is selected, it will remain for hours, days or weeks until another shade is chosen.

Created by a team of US scientists, physicists, engineers and business experts, iPolish® press-on nails are available in Starter Kits. These include 24 nails in 12 standard sizes, a nail priming wipe, iPolish® Hyper Glue and Quick Dry Clear Top Coat, plus a ‘Magic Wand’ which receives selected colours from the iPolish® app and transmits them onto nails. Refill press-ons can be ordered.

Nail Tech Success Planner

Inspired by her popular Nail Tech Success Planner digital download, award-winning nail pro & educator, Rebecca Orme, has launched its features in a ‘more interactive’ format. The Nail Tech Success Planner app serves to support nail techs that earn less than they should but aren’t sure how to fix this, helping them understand the numbers behind their businesses.

Rebecca Orme

Its dashboard offers an instant overview of income, expenses and profit, while a treatment pricing calculator ensures that services are making revenue. “This tells you the minimum price you should charge for a service based on your costs,” Rebecca reveals. The app also includes a booking system, where deposits can be collected, as well as tools to store client information, make notes and set financial goals.

Access the app for £29 per month via www.nailtechsuccessplanner.com

O Nail AI Lamp

Curing has had a supersmart upgrade courtesy of the AI Nail Lamp from O Nail. The UV/LED lamp contains an artificial intelligence computer to accurately detect nails and provide targeted UV exposure, while a screen on top of the device shows the placement of hands in the machine.

The lamp’s AI system learns its user’s curing routine, increasing precision with every use. It also supports a consistent cure of a wide range of professional nail brands.

For pros practicing on tips or press-on nails, a ‘practice mode’ is available, disabling AI recognition. Meanwhile for those seeking a mobile solution, a wireless battery pack can be purchased, alongside a keyboard to control the lamp’s settings without touching it.

UK pros can buy the O Nail AI Lamp for £299 + VAT via www.kirstymeakin.com
