HOW TO MOTIVATE A SALON TEAM
M otivating staff members isn’t about adding pressure: rather creating a shared sense of purpose and visible rewards. When your team understands why they’re working towards specific goals, everything shifts.
The most successful teams don’t just hit numbers – they rally behind a collective aim. In other words, they have a ‘pot’ that they are all contributing to. This isn’t just about money, it also represents:
• Team experiences.
• Career progression.
• Life-changing rewards – for example, holidays and house deposits.
When everyone is focused on a shared outcome, collaboration replaces competition.
The power of the dream sheet
Begin each year with clarity by putting together a dream sheet. This is a simple but powerful way to help reward your team. Explore the following with each team member:
• What do they want financially?
• What lifestyle are they working towards?
• Where are they now vs where do they want to be?
• Where do they want to travel to?
• What makes them excited?
Personal goals are among the most powerful motivators, and every employee will have their own vision. To help staff achieve their goals, my salons have offered opportunities including a trip to Australia and jobs at New York Fashion Week and Cannes Film Festival.
When you weave personal ambitions into the fabric of your workplace, it stops feeling purely professional. And once that happens, motivation becomes unstoppable.
Make business reviews matter
These meetings set the tone for everything in the salon. They’re where you share business-wide goals, break down individual targets, introduce incentives and align everyone on the same vision.
But the key isn’t just what you say – it’s how clearly employees see themselves in it. Everyone should leave thinking: ‘I know exactly what I’m working towards and why it matters’.
Show the ‘why’
Targets without meaning feel like pressure, whereas targets with purpose feel like opportunity. Be transparent about your ‘why’ and singular motivation will become collective energy. Explain to employees that:
• Hitting targets fills the pot.
• The pot funds experiences, rewards and life goals.
• Everyone benefits when the salon grows.
One of the best ways to energise your team is to highlight the goals you’ve already helped achieve. Talk about previous team holidays, and share the experiences of employees who have saved house deposits or attended events across the globe. When people see what’s possible, belief turns into action.
Clarity = consistency
When a salon team is pulled in different directions, energy drops. However, when everyone is focused on one clear goal, momentum builds. Try implementing the following:
• A monthly team focus – for example, retail, rebooking or treatment upgrades.
• Team challenges linked to your pot.
• Visual trackers so progress is visible.
Bring goals to life Motivation fades when goals feel distant. Ensure you implement visible progress tracking, share examples of what your pot is funding and celebrate contributions regularly. Teams aren’t motivated by targets; they are motivated by what those targets make possible. When everyone understands the ‘why’ and believes in the rewards, you won’t need to push. Instead, your team will naturally pull together.
