A focus on the various forms of CPD (continuing professional development) in the nail sector

nail superstars! This month, I want to explore the importance of continuing professional development (CPD): from choosing a valuable learning route to recording your progress.
When it comes to educational development, the terms ‘certificate’ and ‘qualifications’ are used interchangeably, however there are distinct differences between the two:
• A CPD, accredited or endorsed certificate is administered by a non-government organisation, and certifies that an individual has completed a course of study or training. It is proof that a course has been completed and that the student has achieved a certain level of competency in a particular area.
• A qualification is recognition of a learner’s ability to perform a particular task or job and is awarded by a government body. It is based on a set of standards and criteria points. An example in our industry is an Ofqual accredited qualification, where the Ofqual logo will be featured on the certificate.
The benefits of CPD, accredited & endorsed courses
These courses help you to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in your industry field. This ensures that you remain competent, by acquiring new skills and expanding your knowledge base, thus enhancing your professional credibility.
CPD also boosts confidence and aids personal growth: encouraging you to think critically and explore new ideas. This can lead to enhanced creativity, improved problem-solving capabilities and an ableness to adapt to evolving industry trends.

I have and still do CPD qualifications, to update skills where there is no government-recognised qualification available. For example, I undertook a course in the dip system, as I already hold an Ofqual nail qualification, but wanted to expand my knowledge of its application. Even if I hold a recognised qualification in L&P application, for example, I would still be keen to enrol on L&P workshops and courses to acquire additional skills.
If you are not sure which area of nails to turn to next, consider completing a CPD course before investing in a qualification, so that you can make an informed decision on your future career steps.
How to keep your CPD records
It is important to record your CPD, whether using a free internet download or specific business template. I record my CPD on an annual basis, from 1 January to 31 December.
Your record should list the date the CPD was completed and how many minutes or hours it took. Detail the CPD type; such as an industry-specific course, attending a trade event or participating in a competition. Next, add the organisation your CPD was attained with, how it was completed (face-to-face or online, for example), and evidence to support your attendance and completion.
To finish, detail how this CPD type meets development criteria. It could be working directly in the industry, aiding a client treatment, for your personal development or to meet the criteria of an awarding organisation. When complete, you will have a detailed document to showcase to employers and a handy record of your achievements.
