British Beauty Council survey hopes to uncover the sector’s make-up

The British Beauty Council (BBCo) has launched The Beauty Census, which encourages responses from industry professionals and consumers in order to ‘create a beauty industry that looks like you’.

The survey covers areas of inclusivity, education, equity and accessibility, and runs until 26 July. The results will be compiled and presented at British Beauty Week 2024 (23-27 October).

“We have done extensive research into the statistical social footprint of the beauty industry, however anecdotal evidence into human behaviours and challenges within the industry is lacking,” comments Millie

Millie Kendall OBE

Kendall OBE, CEO of the British Beauty Council. “That’s why we have launched this campaign: A Beauty Industry That Looks Like You. It will ensure we have the scope of data we need to propel real change when it comes to access to industry, social mobility, inclusivity and equity.” The Council has collaborated with multi-disciplinary creative house, Spring, to front the survey with an arresting visual campaign. It features beauty professionals including brand founder & diversity advocate, Ateh Jewel, make-up artist & Glow Up alumni, Jack Oliver, and MD of L’Occitane UK & Ireland, Dianna Tieu. Photographed by Liz Collins, whose portfolio spans British Vogue, Beauty Papers, Elle magazine and Love, those involved offer up a snapshot of British beauty today.

The survey is open to all that work within and shop from the beauty industry in the UK. It has been curated to ensure relevant data is collected from both business and consumer groups, ensuring the results give an holistic understanding of beauty.

NHBF launches manifesto to promote the value of the hair & beauty industry

The National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) has unveiled its Manifesto 2024, highlighting the UK hair and beauty industry’s vital role and setting out recommendations for the next government ahead of a general election.

The key themes outlined in the manifesto are:

• The value of the industry to the UK economy and communities: With barbers and nail and beauty salons growing but the number of hairdressers in decline, the NHBF calls for VAT reform, business rates reform, restraint on rising wages, positive high street policies and investment, further targeted support on energy and a crackdown on tax-evading businesses.

• Employment, skills and apprenticeships: The hair and beauty sector is a significant employer of young people, but the affordability of apprentices is proving challenging. The NHBF calls for effective redistribution of levy funding, flexi-apprenticeships, joint promotion of the Beauty T Level, modernised careers advice and improved DofE liaison with schools.

• Health and wellbeing: Recognising how hair and beauty businesses promote solutions to mental health, stress, hair loss and cancer care and support NHS services through complementary therapies, the NHBF calls for further action to encourage social prescribing and achieve a level playing field for the sector as aesthetics legislation is implemented.

• Sustainability: The NHBF showcases positive environmental initiatives in the industry, including contributions to net zero targets, and calls for further incentives to support businesses.

Caroline Larissey, NHBF chief executive, comments: “This manifesto lays out a clear vision for how government can better support the creativity, entrepreneurship and public service displayed by our members. With targeted support, the sector – which offers so much to the

Caroline Larissey economy and local communities, can continue to play an important role in the UK’s economic recovery, youth employment, apprenticeships and the enhancement of people’s wellbeing and sustainability into the future.” www.nhbf.co.uk/nhbf-manifesto-2024

CTPA calls on UK government for animal-free chemical testing strategy

UK trade association, the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), is calling on the UK government to publish a dedicated Non-Animal New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) strategy.

Animal testing of cosmetic products and ingredients has been banned in the UK and EU since 2004 and 2009 respectively, and the UK and EU cosmetics industry has invested over €50 million over the past 25 years, making it a global leader in NAMs.

Ahead of the next general election, the CTPA has published a manifesto, with a dedicated NAMS strategy being one of its key asks. On 25 April 2024, the organisation held seminar, For a Government Strategy on Non-Animal Methodologies, which brought together representatives from UK government and the cosmetics and chemicals industry, NGOs, academics and NAMs experts.

Dr Emma Meredith
Courtesy of Linkedin.com

Andrew Griffith MP, minister of state for science, innovation & technology, shared a video message, where he conveyed the UK government’s commitment to driving forward the development and use of non-animal scientific methods through publication of a plan. He also shared that the government is doubling its investment in non-animal methods.

Dr Emma Meredith, director general of the CTPA, comments: “CTPA wholeheartedly welcomes the UK government’s intention to draw up a plan to accelerate the use of NAMs and as this is a key ask in the CTPA Manifesto 2024 ahead of the general election, I offer our full support to the government.

“A strategy will show the UK’s dedication to becoming a world leader on this exciting journey to revolutionise the way that chemicals have traditionally been safety tested, and CTPA is extremely pleased to have convened a neutral forum for NAMs experts, promoting open discussion about how to seize opportunities and overcome challenges.” www.ctpa.org.uk

Studex scores slam dunk at US basketball championship

What does a piercing brand have in common with basketball players? An unwavering desire to sparkle – and that’s just what happened at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Final Four Men’s College Basketball Championship in Arizona. Piercing specialist, Studex USA, was invited to the four-day championship in Glendale to join long-term piercing partner, Banter by Piercing Pagoda. The brands created a locker room-themed installation as a photo backdrop to an entertainment and piercing area, and fans were invited to ‘shoot their shot’ to win a free ear piercing, as well as take part in other interactive engagement areas. Digital billboards overlooked the Westgate Waterdance Plaza, featuring basketballs bouncing from screen to screen and diamonds falling from the top with Studex’s tagline: Piercing You Can Trust.

Certified professional piercers used System 75: a hand pressured, FDA medical approved device. Each visitor was given a bottle of Studex Advanced aftercare and supplied with advice and tips to look after their new piercings. The GelBottle Inc expands All-in-One BIAB™ builder gel nail range

Professional nail brand, The GelBottle Inc (TGB), has added three shades to its All-in-One BIAB™ collection. Originally designed for use with The GelBottle Inc DesignEx Pro™ extensions, All-in-One BIAB™ is a soak-off, medium viscosity builder gel that serves as a base coat, builder gel and top coat. The formula contains 50% less HEMA than TGB’s Original BIAB™ and supports natural nail growth as a strong, protective overlay. Shades NU06, NU07 and NU08 are inspired by popular TGB BIAB™ shades:

NU06 – shimmering pink inspired by Aurora.

NU07 – pale pink inspired by Lady: ideal for creating a classic French.

NU08 – vibrant pink inspired by Baby.

Daisy Kalnina

All-in-One BIAB™ is among The GelBottle Inc‘s extensive BIAB™ (Builder In A Bottle) selection, also featuring Original BIAB™, Hema-Free BIAB™ and File-Off BIAB™, the latter of which can be used to create two to three millimetre extensions of the natural nail. Each formula is self-levelling, and shades can be worn alone or under gel polish colours. “I created BIAB™ because I could see the growing demand from clients looking to strengthen and care for their natural nails and for nail technicians to have a service that was affordable and achievable in a short amount of time,” comments Daisy Kalnina, founder & CEO of The GelBottle Inc. “As a nail tech, I understand that every client has unique needs and preferences, which is why we offer such an extensive range of BIAB™ shades and formulations.” The GelBottle Inc BIAB™ products are available via www.thegelbottle.com
