My nail journey
I’ve always been creative and enjoyed painting my nails. I qualified just over 10 years ago and my first job was at WAH Nails, London, which focused on creating nail art designs, predominantly using nail polish. There isn’t much room for error with this medium, so the role taught me patience and helped enhance my artistic skills.
I have worked in various salon environments until recently, when I decided to become a freelance tech. I’ve opened a studio with a friend in London’s Containerville and love having my own space. My work area is very ‘me’, and features colourful artwork on the walls. My clients are a mix of corporate and creative, and some of the most supportive people I’ve ever met.
This was my first viral nail design and is the one I see recreated most. My favourite seasonal style is Halloween!
What makes me happy
I love to travel and feel most at peace when near the ocean. I enjoy going to exhibitions, exploring Kew Gardens and catching up with friends. If I feel overwhelmed, I like to put on a TV series and paint my nails.
Career highlights
I have worked with singer, Anne-Marie, creating press-on nails for an album cover, music videos, campaigns and TV appearances. It was amazing to collaborate with someone artistic who knows their sense of style, yet is open to suggestions. I also had the opportunity to create designs reflecting Japanese culture for sprinter, Dina Asher-Smith MBE’s various appearances at the Tokyo Olympics.
Personal nail picks
My manicures are usually chaotic, as I wear a different design on each hand.
A day in my life
I start my morning with an iced latte. I then travel to clients’ houses or if I’m in my studio, I tidy my desk and message clients to see what nail art they desire at their next appointment. After work, I’ll watch a TV programme, such as Below Deck or House.
Social media tips
My Instagram account received a lot of interest during the first lockdown. I posted content every other day and saw my follower count grow.
My top tips are:
1. Be consistent: Whether you post every other day or three times per week, consistency is important, because algorithms are constantly changing. If you aren’t posting, make sure you are liking or responding to comments on your content.
2. Be interactive: This is also vital in terms of algorithms. Like and comment on other posts. You never know who may stumble across your profile!
3. Utilise scheduling features: Social media can be exhausting, so scheduling allows you to step away while still appearing interactive.
My inspirations
My nail art designs are inspired by various things, from holiday destinations to seasons, art galleries, nature and films.
Nail art advice
My top tip is to practice. The way someone else achieves a nail look may not work for you, so create it in your own way. I recommend breaking designs into easy segments. Also, don’t get frustrated with yourself – no one is perfect the first time around. Utilise social media, watch tutorials and reach out to other nail techs for support.
