Jessica Roach had a double celebration on her 30th birthday, as she also attained a nail qualification with LIT Training Academy, turning her nail styling hobby into a career.
The creative found enjoyment in painting her nails during lockdown, and while on maternity leave with her third child, she invested in nail training. “On qualifying last July, I rented a nail desk at a local salon so I could offer treatments on Saturdays,” she shares. “I had been a client at the salon for years and feel very comfortable there. However, I still juggle a full-time job and parenting alongside my nail work, so in order to offer more appointments to clients, I also transformed a space at home. Now, I can work in the evenings, when the children are asleep.”
Jessica’s nail room reveals Scandi-style décor, with neutral, black and white tones. “I have created the vibe I would like when visiting a salon,” she reveals. “Clients feel relaxed and at home in the cosy, carpeted space.”
The nail stylist specialises in gel polish and builder gel services, with nail art upgrades available. She also offers brow waxing, tinting and lamination. “I love transforming my clients’ nails from the flexibility of my home salon space,” Jessica continues. “Sometimes, I feel that I do not achieve goals as quickly as I would like, as I have children to consider, but working from home has opened up more options and given me the space to keep learning, progressing and building my business.”

Former street artist, Miska, channelled her creativity into a home-based nail studio, from which she offers manicures and gel enhancements. “Street art made me who I am,” she shares. “Cutting stencils requires a lot of precision, and this skill helped me to become an accomplished nail tech.”
Miska immersed in the nail world via reading books and scouring the internet, before training with Glasgow Beauty School in 2016. On receiving her qualification, she set up her home studio with a focus on great hygiene, quality products and nail artistry at affordable price points for clients. She is a brand ambassador for The Nail Lab, Didier Laboratories and Claveclub, and offers class B medical sterilisation for her manicure tools.
The décor of Miska’s salon is white, black and green, with framed artwork and creative books to inspire and intrigue visitors. “My clients say that the studio is very welcoming,” she reveals. “The design of the space is inspired by street art and some of my work is visible, alongside lots of plants. The vibe is very friendly; all of my clients are regular and we chat and watch Netflix during their appointments.
“Edinburgh is such a multi-cultural city, which presents me with a varied clientele. This makes my job even more exciting!”
