Lights, Camera, Nail Art: A guide to creating great video content
When I entered The World’s Star Nail Artist competition, I was required to make a compelling introductory video. I was then tasked with creating an engaging video to coincide with each challenge. Whether you’re creating videos for competition entries or social media, this column will dive into developing jaw-dropping content to capture attention. You’ve already got the skills that make your nails pop, and now it’s time to showcase them to the world. Here are my top tips:
Get inspired
Firstly, seek inspiration from fellow nail artists. Watch their videos and ascertain what works and engages you. This can give you a good basis for your own unique video. If creating a video for a competition, be sure to add your personality and style, and use the work of others as inspiration. Include all elements required in the brief.
Script & shine
Creating a script for your video is such a time-saving tip and will give you a clear directive. Start by noting bullet points of what you wish to include, then expand on each area. You could also add a voiceover instead of speaking into the camera, but remember to still show your face. This will help the viewer to form a connection with you.
Introduce yourself like a pro
Start your video with a warm greeting, as if you’re chatting to a friend. Introduce yourself: share snippets of the creative journey, from the highs to the lows and everything in between.
Showcase your signature style
Create videos of nail designs that define you as an artist. Whether intricate floral patterns or bold geometric shapes, let your unique style sparkle and show your skills as an artist by creating videos for all abilities.
Shout out your favourite products
Reveal the products you use to create your nail designs, to inspire others and help them on their journey. Be genuine about why these products have become your essentials and tag the brands you use to capture their attention. They may repost to their feed or story to support your profile.
Dream big, glitter bigger
Video content doesn’t just have to showcase nail art creation; it can be a chance to let your dreams shimmer on camera. Share your aspirations and goals in the nail world. Whether it’s opening your own salon, teaching internationally or taking home a coveted competition trophy, let your audience in on your dreams. This not only adds a personal touch, but inspires others to reach for the stars.

Setting the stage: Filming techniques
Let’s jump into the technical side of things. Here are some filming techniques to make your demo videos as dazzling as your nail art:
1. Equipment:
You don’t need the latest, super-duper expensive camera equipment. Your phone can do the job: just learn its functions. For videos, film in 4k 60fps or HD 60 or use cinematic mode, being mindful that this will create a large file.
2. Lighting magic:
Natural light is your best friend. Film in a well-lit space, preferably with soft, diffused sunlight. If that’s not possible, invest in a ring light to create an evenly lit and flattering environment.
3. Steady as she glows:
Keep your camera steady when filming. Use a tripod or stable surface to avoid shaky footage. A steady shot not only looks more professional, but ensures that your intricate details are captured flawlessly.
4. Angelic angles:
Experiment with camera angles to find the most flattering shot. Play with different perspectives to showcase yourself and your artistry in the best light.
5. Frame it right:
Ensure your filming area showcases your personality. Change up the backgrounds or places you are filming in to make it unique to you.
6. Practice makes perfect:
Don’t be disheartened if you don’t nail your video recording on your first try. You can record as many takes as you need until you’re satisfied. Remember, it’s your time to shine, so take your time.
Editing like a pro
Once you’ve taken footage, it’s time to edit. Trim any unnecessary content, add some background music, and maybe even throw in some text overlays to guide your viewers through the creative process.
Keep the video engaging, fun and true to your style. There are plenty of user-friendly editing apps and software available; my favourite is Inshot. Keep the video timely for maximum engagement. Watch it back and consider areas that can be cut to keep it exciting.

Embrace your sparkle: Be true to you
Let your authenticity be your guiding light. Celebrate the magic that happens when you stay true to your unique style: resist the urge to compare, and allow your personality to shine. This journey is about showcasing your individual magic, so embrace it, be proud of it and let your true colours dazzle.
And there you have it, my guide to crafting a video that showcases your talent, passion and personality. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to wowing your audience.
