Victoria Brownlie

British Beauty Council policy expert named in King’s Birthday Honours List

Victoria Brownlie, chief of policy & sustainability at the British Beauty Council (BBCo), has been named in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2024. The Sussex native is to receive an MBE for services to the beauty and personal care industry, which include ensuring equitable access for minority communities and accelerating sustainability efforts.

In her roles at the British Beauty Council and formerly as director of policy & public affairs at the National Hair & Beauty Federation, Brownlie played a vital role in securing £500m of targeted support for the beauty industry in the wake of Covid-19.

On receiving the accolade, she comments: “It’s an absolute honour to receive such recognition for a role I love and take so much pride in. Much of my life has been spent fighting for the underdog and those often dismissed out of turn, and the industry I represent now is no exception. This award gives much-needed recognition for the beauty and personal care sector as a formidable and relevant industry with a lot to say for itself.” During Victoria’s time at the BBCo, she has secured an earlier reopening of the industry post-lockdown and an £18,000 ‘restart grant’. Brownlie also launched the Sustainable Beauty Coalition and works with government representatives to support the Race to Net Zero campaign. www.britishbeautycouncil.com

Hair & beauty salons on Britain’s high streets have doubled in number in 15 years

Beauty salons, hairdressers and takeaways have surged in number on Britain’s high streets since 2010, replacing banks and clothes shops. A report by policy and research consultancy, Public First, analysed official datasets, which included details of VAT-registered businesses in the UK. This analysis found that hairdressers and beauty salons have increased in number by 11,835 – a 110% boost – in 15 years.

Public First attributes the shake-up to the rise of online shopping and banking and the popularity of remote working. The company undertook a nationally representative poll of adults across the country to better understand the feelings surrounding the changing high street. It found that 20% of under 25s think there are too many nail bars: a figure that rises to over two-fifths of those aged 55 and above.

Focusing on regions, the survey revealed that 39% of respondents in the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber feel there are too many nail bars, but 45% of those surveyed in London feel there are the right amount. A representative from Public First comments: “Overall, older demographics are most discontented with the changing face of town and city centres. In an age when the boomer generation, and older, are seen to wield enormous economic power, it is perhaps surprising that urban spaces are increasingly revolving around the needs and wants of the young.”

50% OF BEAUTY PROFESSIONALS IDENTIFY AS NEURODIVERGENT, RESEARCH REVEALS

A survey conducted by salon, spa and fitness booking and management software, Vagaro, has found that half of beauty pros identify as neurodivergent: where the brain processes information in a way that is not typical of most individuals.

The research for Autism Acceptance Month in April also found that 27% of respondents work with a neurodivergent team member, and 43% offer services tailored to meet the needs of neurodivergent or autistic clients. Actions include offering quieter treatments and various lighting options.

Over half (56%) of beauty pros surveyed said that technology is helpful in making accommodations for neurodivergent clients. Online booking systems, digital check-ins and forms and automated appointment reminders lessen the need to communicate verbally. They also eliminate social pressure and streamline communication, reducing factors that can contribute to overstimulation. “Our survey showcases the growing dedication of salon and spa professionals to inclusivity and innovation,” comments Charity Hudnall, Vagaro’s chief marketing officer. “By encouraging acceptance, celebrating diversity and leveraging technology, we can create more accessible spaces for both neurodivergent clients and industry professionals.” www.vagaro.com
