STRATEGIES & TRAITS THAT MAKE A SUCCESSFUL NAIL TEAM
Charlotte Lowe OPI educator @charlotteloweopi
Being part of a great team can aid your success as an individual within the industry, as the support gleaned from team members can be extremely valuable.
My colleagues in the OPI education team comprise educators who have each taken a different journey to reach their career goals. Some are business owners and others are busy mums, balancing work with caring for their children: but all are successful. Every time I work alongside my teammates or we meet at the annual OPI Train The Trainer event, I learn something new. Being part of a team is important for individual growth and progression, and there is something amazing about working with people who are always willing to make time for and inspire one another.
To be successful, a good team must identify clear goals and priorities, and the individuals within the team must work to reach them. The OPI education team members share stories of initiatives that have worked well and areas that require improvement, which help the team to grow and develop. Even though we are based all over the UK and Ireland, we regularly communicate with one another and offer support.
Individually and as a team, there should be plans to enhance skills and expand knowledge. A good team will encourage growth and give its individuals opportunities for development. This industry offers training in a variety of areas, from technical to business skills, and if your teammates have experiences that differ to yours, it can be advantageous to share learnings and advice.
Every team needs a great leader, and the OPI education team is led by Belinda Price: OPI’s education & capability manager. She has a wealth of experience in the industry and is admired by every member of the team. Belinda is involved in all team activities and offers support whenever it is needed. She is an inspiration to us all, and a reason why we work so well together.
Within the team, each member recognises that they have different strengths or areas of work that they enjoy more than others. When educating large groups of learners or hosting events, we often get the chance to work alongside one another, which means we can offer the maximum amount of support to our learners. I believe that collaborative working leads to better outcomes, and recognising that we have different strengths and weaknesses gives us the opportunity to excel in the areas we are best at, and creates great job satisfaction. A successful team should be aware of the ever-evolving industry and keep up-to-date with trends and new products. As well as our roles as educators, we feel it is important to maintain a presence online, and do our best to share our work and promote our education offerings to existing and potential learners.
Being part of a strong and supportive team is so powerful and can help you to build an amazing career in the industry. If you are a part of a team already, look to your peers for help and support. If you are a lone worker, search for teams or groups that you can join, such as the OPI Professional Community UK on Facebook. This is run by the OPI education team, which has been referred to as ‘a powerhouse of support’.
